On Sunday, July 4th, Boy Scouts from Salem's Troop 83 and Troop 24 participated in the annual celebration at Derby Wharf in Salem. The Scouts helped open the ceremony by processing in with Mayor Kim Driscoll, members of the Salem's Veterans Color Guard Unit and Salem Girl Scouts. The Scouting program works to build character, good citizenship, and personal fitness in young men.
Since its inception in 1910, the Scouts have learned to live the principles of the Scout Oath and Law through community service and "helping other people at all times." Boy Scouts around the country participate in Independence Day parades annually as a sign of patriotism and good citizenship.
